Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Brontë (“we”, “us”) handles personal information when you visit brontewriter.com, join the waitlist, and use the Brontë writing app. Brontë is operated by Vishnu Jayadevan. If you have questions, contact us at [email protected].

In short: we collect what we need to run the waitlist and the app, we don’t track you, and your writing is yours. We never sell your information, use it for advertising, or use it to train any AI system.

The website and waitlist

What we collect

• Your email address, when you submit it to join the waitlist.
• Your IP address and a timestamp, recorded automatically with your submission to prevent abuse and keep a basic record of consent.
• Anti-bot signals. We use Cloudflare Turnstile to confirm submissions come from a person, not a bot. Turnstile may process limited device and interaction data to make that assessment. It is privacy-oriented and is not used to track you across sites.

The website does not use advertising or analytics cookies, and we do not track you across the web.

Why we use it

We use your email solely to contact you about Brontë, primarily to let you know when access is available. We rely on your consent (given when you submit the form) and our legitimate interest in operating a waitlist.

Where it’s stored and for how long

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages and waitlist entries are stored in Cloudflare D1. Cloudflare acts as our processor and may store and process this data on its global infrastructure. We keep your email until Brontë launches and we have contacted you, or until you ask us to remove it, whichever comes first.

The Brontë app

Your account

You sign in to Brontë with Google. When you do, Google shares your name, email address, profile picture and a Google account identifier with us; we store these to create and recognise your account. We ask Google for nothing else: we do not receive your Google password, and we have no access to your Gmail, Drive, contacts or other Google data.

Your writing

To provide the app, we store what you create in it:

• Your projects, documents, folders and project material, with their titles, statuses and settings.
• Earlier versions of your documents (version history and checkpoints), which the app keeps so you can restore them and thins out automatically over time.
• Documents you delete, which stay in the project’s Deleted area until you restore them or delete them forever.
• A search index built from your text, so you can search your projects.
• A record of your writing activity (when you saved, in which document, and how many words were added or removed), which powers your writing statistics.

Your writing belongs to you. We use it only to run the app for you: to save it, show it, search it, and export it when you ask. We do not read it, analyse it for any other purpose, share it, sell or license it, or use it to train AI, and we do not let anyone else use it to train AI. We would only access it when you ask us to help with a problem, or where we are legally required to.

Cookies and browser storage

• A session cookie keeps you signed in. It lasts up to 30 days, or until you sign out.
• A short-lived cookie (10 minutes) protects the sign-in process with Google.
• Your browser’s local storage holds your typography preferences and, if your connection drops, the text you write offline until it is saved to your account. This stays on your device.

These are all strictly necessary for the app to work. The app uses no advertising, analytics or tracking cookies.

Logs

Like most web services, our servers record basic technical information with each request: your IP address, the time, the page or action requested, and whether it succeeded. We use these logs only to keep the app secure and working, and keep them for a limited time.

Why we use it

We process your account information and writing to provide the service you signed up for, and logs for our legitimate interest in keeping it secure and reliable.

Where it’s stored and for how long

Your account and writing are stored on servers operated by our hosting provider, which acts as our processor. We keep them for as long as you have an account. You stay in control:

• Delete forever, from a project’s Deleted area, permanently removes a document.
• Deleting a project permanently removes all of its documents, earlier versions and search index.
• Deleting your account, from Settings, permanently removes all of your projects, your writing activity, your account details and your sign-in sessions.

You can export your writing at any time as PDF or Markdown, including before you delete anything.

Sharing

We do not sell or rent your information. We share it only with the service providers we need to run Brontë (Cloudflare for the website and waitlist and to deliver the app securely, Google for sign-in, and our hosting provider for the app), or where required by law.

Your rights

Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you may request access to, correction of, or erasure of your personal data, and you may withdraw your consent at any time. Most of this you can do yourself in the app; for anything else, email [email protected]. The same address serves as our contact for any grievance regarding your data.

Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections and keeping each account’s data separate. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children

The site and Brontë are not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18.

Changes

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on this page with a revised “Last updated” date.
